Weekly Fish ID-Quiz - Just for Fun !! |
Each week we post some new pictures here on the Listening Guide for this week's show, and we leave the names off. It will be a good exercise for you to try to identify the item in each picture. Some pictures will probably be easy to identify, but others will probably be difficult. Tom and Nevin will identify each picture during the first few minutes of this show. |

Another example of people letting pets go into the wild.

Oceans’ surface salinity mapped. Accompanying photo is interesting – looks like some real differences between Pacific & Atlantic oceans …

It’s been a slow week for fishy news – I guess they’re making up for the last week or so.
Thanks,
Dan in St. Louis
PS – the Squid story I sent in last week is actually not about the Humboldt squid – it concerns a much smaller, less common species. |

Callers during this Show ;^ } |
Brian from Magnolia, Texas, calls and discusses his plans to create a 55-gallon planted aquarium with a layer of miracle potting soil under a layer of gravel. Brian has not bought the aquarium or any of the equipment yet. He has lots of unanswered questions and does not sound too confident. Tom says maybe this project is too complicated, and maybe Brian would be better off putting the plants in terra cotta pots with some soil. Tom and Nevin ask Brian about using R/O water, about which aquarium filter, and what kind of aquarium lights? Brian mentions that he's simultaneously in a chat session with another aquarist, who is using soil and wants to talk with Tom and Nevin right now. So Brian hangs up. |
|
Vinnie calls and says that he's been trying to help Brian via instant messaging. Vinnie thinks that Brian should start from the beginning by getting a smaller aquarium. Tom suggests maybe a 30-gallon long aquarium, and Vinnie says that sounds better. Vinnie says there is a lot for Brian to learn about getting a new aquarium started especially getting the beneficial bacteria cycled. Vinnie is worried that Brian's 55-gallon with soil is just too complicated for a new aquarist like Brian. Tom and Nevin agree. Vinnie says he's growing live plants in Styrofoam cups with some soil in the cups. |
