In Las Vegas, Nevada, US,
Aquariums Bring the Sea to the Desert.
"Well, hello there." Swimmer and shark, shown above, meet eye to eye at the Golden Nugget, one of four Las Vegas resorts with big aquariums. Five species of sharks occupy this 200,000-gallon saltwater tank, which is encircled by a freshwater pool populated with curious humans. The granddaddy of the aquariums in Las Vegas is Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, where the largest enclosure holds 1.3 million gallons of water. The several aquariums are managed by curator Jack Jewell, who got his first fish tank when he was a young boy. That tank held a whopping 10 gallons of water. "I was quickly fascinated by fish in every single respect," Jewell says. A career selling tropical fish led him to the Las Vegas Strip. Jewell now oversees the care of more than 2,000 varieties of fish. But it's those fearsome creatures with the razor-sharp teeth that draw the crowds -- more than 1 million people a year. "They come to see the sharks. It's all about that," the curator says. "People continue to be endlessly fascinated by the mystique, their instinctive fear of the unknown and of the powerful animal that the shark portrays." Click here to read more.
Very interesting. How do you think it affects the fish?
